Hello. Welcome to my world.
This website showcases my printmaking artworks including lithography, cyanotypes and etchings inspired by Wales where I live.
My life has always been rooted in the countryside. I grew up surrounded by the wild beauty of Dartmoor, nourished by its produce, cared for by a vibrant, caring community and finding freedom and adventure in the open landscape.
Since moving to Wales to bring up the family I always sourced local produce when making my career as a chef. Throughout my life I have been surrounded by creative people who share my passion for quality of life and a strong sense of place.
Being a classical chef was my way of creating through taste and sight, a process that required professional training and skill along with imagination and creativity. This enabled me to share the joy of quality ingredients with others.
The comfort found in the ritual of the process in cooking has led me to the same love of process found in printing and painting. These have now become my way of sharing how I feel and using this as a record of what I value.
My subject matter encapsulates domestic and rural sights, a narrative of the seasons and everyday life in which I live. Inspiration for the light and colour of my surroundings I have found in the work of the Impressionists; those of Bonnard, Cezanne, and Matisse. The freedom of the brushstrokes echoing the freedom of my childhood while their ability to capture a moment in time and place can take transport you back to a place and time.
Subjects often depicted in the work of the painters of the Dutch Golden Age, simple kitchen scenes, food and family life have shown me that such subjects are worthy of being recorded and elevated.
In both subject matter and skill, the drama of the etchings of Samuel Palmer, the sense of place found in Norman Ackroyd’s work and the narrative of David Jones’ prints have all encouraged me in the pursuit of the many branches of print making.
Working in print I find a similarity of process which encompassed my cooking skills. With printing, the addition of different processes can create wonderful effects of light, drama, and colour. Through learning these processes I hope to emulate the pleasure for myself and others as I still do in my cooking and sharing with others.
